For dog owners who understand the loose, often wrong, definition of the word 'indestructible' you will probably relate to this scenario. You buy an indestructible dog toy and one of two things happens.
1. The toy is indeed indestructible but it's so hard, so non-pliable, your dog does not view it as a dog toy any more than it would an ordinary house brick.
2. The indestructible dog toy is, within 60 minutes, in pieces strewn around the floor. Destroyed. Destructed.
Finding a genuinely indestructible dog toy that dogs actually enjoy playing with and that lives up to its billing of being able to survive contact with a dog for longer than a day is like the search for the holy grail for lots of owners.
We should probably redefine the term indestructible and change it, long lasting.
The Vanfine (almost) indestructible dog squeaky dog chew toy, therefore, held a lot of interest for me. As the owner of two dogs who can destroy the indestructible in the space of a half hour chew session, finding a toy that they would enjoy playing with that could withstand their desire to test the indestructible to its literal limit would be quite an achievement.
I first learned of the Vanfine toy (and brand) after I put out an appeal on Facebook asking for recommendations of a sturdy dog toy that dogs might actually like to play with.
I will state up front; as a rule I do not like squeaky dog toys. There are two main reasons for this. The first, the noise. The second, I find squeaky dog toys can cause more tension between dogs who end up competing for the same toy even though they have one of each.
However, I am not the toy's 'end user' here. My dogs are.
On first inspection, the Vanfine squeaky toy came very impressively packaged. A neat little plastic carrier that, if you wanted, you could use to store the toy in. In our case, the dogs have access to a toy basket so they can pick out the toys they want to play with on any given day.
With all new toys interest is extremely high. Both dogs watch intently as packaging is unwrapped and, regardless of whether the package is a box of new light bulbs (for me) or an exciting new dog toy (not for me), the Danny and Christopher's baseline assumption is that all deliveries, all packages, all visitors, all food is destined for them. On this occasion, they're right.
Let's establish something from the outset. This particular squeaky dog toy is by no means cheap. Retailing at £18.99 at the time of this review.
If you'd asked me 10 years ago if I could see myself paying just shy of twenty pounds for a squeaky dog toy, I'd have been surprised - to say the least.
But my economic modelling proved to me that significantly more than this amount has been spent on attractive looking dog toys that end up in multiple parts within a few minutes and in the bin the next.
Now, as far as I'm concerned there are only two things you need to know from this point on.
Did my dogs enjoy playing with the Vanfine (almost) indestructible squeaky dog toy?
Yes. They did. In fact I'd say they loved it.
The fact that the toy is more robustly built, weightier and has ridges all around the chewing area made it a big hit.
I was able to throw it for them and use it for retrieve training. Hide it in a game of indoor hide & seek and, ultimate test, the dogs played with it independently for long periods.
Is the Vanfine squeaky dog toy really (almost) indestructible?
The acid test.
If this toy was going to get shredded it would have been shredded by now. Danny and Christopher play rough, to put it mildly, and yet this toy looks as good as it did the moment it came out of the packaging.
Whilst this may be tempting fate somewhat, I'd actually like to challenge my dogs - publicly, via the medium of this article - to see if they can destroy this toy.
Short of melting it, drilling it or somehow managing to throw it in to a nearby pool of alligators (it's possible!), I'm not entirely sure how they're going to destroy this one.
All in all it looks like, after many, many years of trying, we've finally found the holy grail of dog toys. One that is enjoyed by the dogs and remains intact even after their best efforts to de-construct it have tried and failed.
So, if you have a dog who fancies themselves as the ultimate destroyer of squeaky toys, let them have a go at this on. Better still, this toy actually comes with a lifetime guarantee. So it seems the manufacturer has total confidence that there aren't many canines out there with canines strong enough to condemn this squeaker to the dog toy graveyard.
The Vanfine (almost) indestructible squeaky dog toy comes in a choice of red or black and a variety of sizes. The one used in this review was large.
