From Struggle to Strength: Bear the Rescue Dog’s Path to Success!

When volunteers from Ditches to Riches Rescue received a call about a litter of puppies living under a mobile home, no one could have predicted what awaited them at the scene.

Upon arrival, it was brought to their attention that one of the puppies was clinging to life with a leg injury caused by a wire wrapped around his leg. Rescue director, Jennifer Chapman, rushed the tiny four-week-old puppy to the clinic.

A Tough Diagnosis

The prognosis was not what we had hoped for. The word “amputation” hit hard. Our veterinary team reassured us that his chances of survival and a pain-free life were higher with surgery. Infection had already set in, and we were running out of time.

Despite the risk of putting a small puppy with injuries under anesthesia, the decision was made to give him a chance. Before surgery, the tiny fighter was given the name Bear, based on his fuzzy black fur and big brown eyes.

The surgery went well, and Bear’s condition remained critical. All we could do was hope for a miracle.

The Road to Recovery

Just days after surgery, Bear surprised us all. When rescue director Jennifer Chapman visited, he began wagging his tail and putting on a show for the camera. This tiny tripod puppy was going to make it, and we just knew he was special!

A few days later, Bear and his littermates were diagnosed with coccidiosis, a common parasitic disease that affects the intestinal tract of animals.

Puppies with underdeveloped immune systems are at a higher risk of contracting this potentially deadly disease. We began treatment immediately, and with every passing day, the puppies began to improve.

Bear quickly adapted to life with three legs. At first, he had difficulties learning to balance while walking. A few weeks later, he was keeping up with his siblings while they ran around the living room.

He spent his days in rescue, going with his foster mom to work, playing with foster siblings, and receiving the love he always deserved. Every day, Bear became stronger, and it was truly inspiring to see him make progress daily.

“Gotcha Day!”

A few months later, the day finally came! Bear and his littermates attended an adoption event hosted by our partner rescue, Dirt Road Doggies Rescue. To our surprise, they all met their forever families that day! It was a bittersweet moment, full of happiness, excitement, and a touch of heartache.

When Bear’s adopter, Jewel, met him for the first time, we knew that they were the perfect match. The immediate bond between them was special. This is the best part about what we do: helping deserving dogs on their journeys to find their forever families.

Today, Bear stands proud in his cap and gown, celebrating his “graduation day”. He is truly living the life we hoped for. His new mom, Jewel, says, “He is doing so well! My lab and he run all over the place, and you would never know he was three-legged! He is the best dog I could have ever asked for.”

What a milestone for a puppy who would not have had a chance without compassionate volunteers, his adopter, and the rescue communities. We always get excited to receive updates from our adopters and previous foster pups, it truly is one of the most rewarding gifts we receive from rescue.

What Does the Future Hold?

Bear’s story is one that is unforgettable and is a true testimony of resilience and strength. He is now a candidate to receive a prosthetic leg. The prosthetic leg would allow Bear to have a higher quality of life by addressing joint and mobility issues as he ages, allowing him to live a more comfortable, happy life. We are extremely excited to see this three-legged furry friend conquer the world!

Our Mission

Just like Bear, many dogs in Wilcox County, Alabama, suffer every day. We continue to fight for a change regarding the stray animal population crisis and the lack of facilities to house them.

According to Alabama state law, every county must provide and maintain an animal shelter for stray animals at large. Several counties in the state have failed to comply and continue to ignore the ongoing crisis.

After several attempts to work with local and state government officials, our pleas for help have been overlooked. We refuse to give up and will continue to speak for the ones who can’t! Without these compassionate volunteers and families willing to adopt, these animals would suffer.

We are currently working with our rescue partners, For the Love of Dogs Vermont and Dirt Road Doggies Rescue, to place these amazing dogs with loving families. Our work here is far from over, but we will continue to fight and hope to make a change.
