Partner to Hero: My Journey with K9 Tambo

For seven years, K9 Tambo wasn't just my partner - he was my shadow, my family. As a police officer and handler, I quickly learned that the bond between a K9 and their handler is unlike any other. We spend more time with our dogs than with anyone else in our lives.

From day one, Tambo was everything I needed in a partner. He wasn't just trained to work; he had an innate drive to serve. Over his career, Tambo responded to hundreds of calls, searched thousands of vehicles, and provided security at major events.

Whether performing routine sweeps or assisting on high-stakes assignments, he gave every task his full commitment. His determination was unwavering.

In 2022, the toll of years of service finally caught up with Tambo. A torn ACL ended his active duty. Yet, even in retirement, his loyalty to me never wavered. Every morning, he still tried to accompany me to work, his enthusiasm and drive unwavering.

Despite his eagerness, his injuries had taken a toll on his mobility, and he struggled to move as freely as he once did.

That's when Project K9 Hero entered our story. When Tambo needed costly TPLO surgery, the organization stepped in, covering more than $7,000 in medical expenses.

Their mission to provide lifetime care for retired police and military dogs became deeply personal to me. I witnessed firsthand how crucial their support is. After their service, retired K9s often face significant medical costs, and without help, the burden falls entirely on the handler.

Even in retirement, Tambo remained a hero. He stepped into a new role as an ambassador for retired working dogs. He traveled across the country, sharing his story to raise awareness of the challenges these dogs face after their careers end.

Tambo had traded active duty for advocacy but continued to make an impact. He was honored at Camden Yards during a Baltimore Orioles game and, on his eleventh birthday, recognized during the Philadelphia Phillies' "Salute to Service" night.

But in July 2025, our journey took an unexpected and heartbreaking turn. Tambo became ill, weak, lethargic, and struggled to stand. At the emergency veterinary hospital, the doctors discovered a ruptured mass on his spleen, causing severe internal bleeding.

The prognosis was grim. The mass was believed to be hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive and often fatal cancer. Initial concerns were that the cancer had already spread to his liver.

It was a devastating moment. I had seen other K9 handlers face similar challenges, and the outcome was often not in their favor. But Tambo, ever the fighter, survived the surgery and made it through the night. By morning, he was stable and eating again. It was a small victory, but a crucial one.

Biopsy results confirmed our fears - Tambo had hemangiosarcoma. But there was a silver lining: the cancer had not yet spread to his liver, making him a candidate for chemotherapy. I was devastated, yet hopeful.

And once again, Project K9 Hero stepped up. Jason Johnson, the organization's founder, didn't hesitate when he said, "We got Tambo 100%, whatever he needs." For the second time, the organization provided more than just financial support - they gave my partner a chance to continue living with purpose.

Today, Tambo is in the middle of chemotherapy. His resolve remains unchanged. Between treatments, he continues his role as an ambassador for retired K9s, sharing his story and raising awareness about the sacrifices working dogs make. He may be fighting cancer, but his spirit is as strong as ever.

Tambo is more than just a police dog. He is my best friend, my family, and my hero. Our journey together has been a testament to service, sacrifice, and the bond that can never be broken between a handler and his K9.

His story serves as a reminder that these dogs give their all in service to our communities, and it is our duty to ensure they are cared for long after their careers end.

Through it all, Tambo has been my partner, my companion, and my inspiration. His life has reminded me of what true loyalty and resilience look like - and it's something I will carry with me, every step of the way.
