Marnie Simpson: ‘I’m Not Really a Party Girl, I Just Want to Be at Home With My Dogs’

Marnie Simpson’s honest and down to earth nature has made her one of the UK’s most loved reality TV stars.

Having recently left ‘Geordie Shore’ for good in search of a quiet life, the self-proclaimed normal girl with a head for business just wants to be surrounded by what she loves most in the world.

We caught up with Marnie after the launch of her latest business venture, iSpy Eyes, to hear all about the biggest loves of her life - her five dogs.

Hi Marnie, thanks for chatting with us today.

Hi!

You own five Chihuahuas, Dawson, Envy, Dhalia, Mr Smith and Travis, don’t you?

I do!

Although they’re all small, they must keep you busy!

(Laughs) They do, five is a bit of a challenge I’ll admit, especially when they’re at different stages in potty training, but I love it.

Dhalia and Dawson are still being house-trained at the moment, but I’m planning on being home for the next few weeks so I can get them finally fully potty trained, they’re nearly there.

I’d love to have more dogs one day. I’m going to be that stereotypical mad lady surrounded by dogs.

I think you actually broke our record today for the most dogs in a photoshoot.

(Laughs) It was a bit of a challenge but it was so much fun.

Tell us a bit about each dog. Let’s start with Mr Smith, how old is he?

He’s 3 years old and like all of the others, I’ve had him since he was a puppy. He has a white short coat.

Smith is really lazy, he lays in bed all day and is a bit reserved.

I got him when I was filming on ‘Geordie Shore’ so I could only get one dog but he made me fall in love with the breed so I always promised myself that the day I left the show would be the day when I’d get loads of dogs, so that’s what I did (laughs).

How did you choose his name?

Well, I named him after Samantha’s boyfriend, Smith, you know the really sexy guy in ‘Sex and the City’? I was watching the show one night and I became obsessed with him and I just thought ‘oh my god I’m going to call my dog that’.

Who came after Smith?

After Smith I got Envy. She’s 1 and she’s got a fawn coloured coat.

Envy is a bit of a stalker, she stalks everyone who comes to the door and she’s the biggest attention seeker.

After Envy, I got Dhalia and Dawson. They’re twins and also 1 now. Dhalia has a long black coat and Dawson has a long white coat.

Dhalia is a bit timid, she reminds me of a cat. She’s quite shy, she likes her own space and she likes being high up on the couch. Dawson is the biggest of the bunch, he’s a big softy, he’s friendly, the most loving. He loves cuddles the most.

How did you choose their names?

Well, because they’re twins I thought they needed names that matched and I just thought that Dhalia and Dawson had a nice ring to it.

That just leaves Travis. How old is he?

He’s 1 year old as well. He’s a miniature Chihuahua with a short black coat. Like Envy, his name just came to me.

Travis is very, very, very naughty (laughs).

He’s very independent, he doesn’t like cuddles or being picked up, he just likes playing with the other dogs.

Where does your love of dogs come from? Did you own any dogs growing up?

Not really, to be honest. I’ve not owned that many animals in the past but I just love Chihuahuas.

I think they all have different personalities and my five dogs are honestly just the most adorable, loving and funny dogs. And all very different. I literally want more. (laughs)

You mentioned leaving ‘Geordie Shore’ was the catalyst to getting more dogs. Do you think your dogs make you want to settle down, maybe more so now than in years gone by?

Yeah, they make me want to be at home more, to be honest.

They sometimes make me really broody as well. Although having a few kids and five dogs would be a bit of a challenge.

I feel like I might have got to a point where I would have had to choose between dogs or kids, and I’ve chosen dogs. (laughs)

You’ve just launched another new business, iSpy Eyes, what’s next?

I have a clothing range coming out soon. I like doing my own thing so I feel like business really is the way forward for me.

I feel like I’m quite a normal girl and I really do like keeping myself to myself. I’m not really a party girl anymore, I like being at home with my dogs.

Sounds exciting!

Okay so talking of your dogs, let’s get back to them. These are probably questions you won’t have been asked before - and probably won’t be again - so we can have some fun.

If you were to swap roles with one of your dogs for a day, who would you choose to swap with?

I’d probably be Envy because she’s really mischievous and she’s got so much energy.

And how do you think she’d cope being you?

(Laughs) She loves attention so she’d love it, to be honest. She’d probably go out every single week and get papped by the paparazzi.

We ask all of our celebrities this question, it’s all in the name of fun.

Okay.

Based on personalities alone, which breeds of dog come to mind when you think of these celebrities (and why)?

Charlotte Crosby - A Border Terrier because my Nanna and Grandad have one and it’s really bubbly and friendly, and that’s just what Charlotte’s like.

Simon Cowell - A Jack Russell, because he can be really moody at times (laughs).

Kylie Jenner - A Toy Poodle. So pretty.

Alan Shearer - A Whippet, because they’re so fast.

Emma Willis - A Siberian Husky, because they both have piercing blue eyes.

And what about you, what breed of dog would you be and why?

(Laughs) I’d be one of those dogs with loads and loads of rolls, maybe a Shar Pei. Really chubby and lazy, just like me.

Moving onto our quick-fire questions, are you ready?

Go for it.

Tell us what one of your dogs last did to make you really laugh out loud.

One of my dogs always has their tongue hanging out, that always makes me smile. But Dawson really made me laugh when he had a phase of hiding poo in everyone’s shoes.

(Laughs) My boyfriend got really angry because he thought it was my mam, so they got into a big argument about it and my mam was like, ‘Casey, I’m not hiding poo in your shoes’ and he was like ‘Yes you are, you’re from Newcastle, you think that’s funny, it’s not funny, it’s not banter’ and the whole time it was Dawson.

(Laughs) Oh dear.

I know.

(We temporarily stop the interview while Marnie deals with a spider in her living room. She’s scared of them, we find out.)

What do you think is the most important life lesson we can learn from dogs?

Take each day as it comes. Dogs just live the best life, don’t they? I sometimes wish I was one of my dogs because they have an easy life.

Finish the following sentence, my dogs are...so crazy, loving, special and every single one of them has a different personality.

This is always a tough question so you might need some time to think about it, but if your dogs could talk and tell you one thing, the secret to happiness or whatever it might be, what would you want them to tell you?

I’d want them to tell me that they love me. I’d love to hear those words come out of their mouths.

Many thanks, Marnie!
